Simon O'Carrigan

I am an illustrator and artist based in Melbourne. I was trained at the Victorian College of the Arts, and at Monash University. I have around ten years of experience since graduating, working on a wide variety of illustration, animation and art projects.

The first quarter of 2017 saw me work on a two minute hand-drawn animation for a forthcoming documentary; a series of humorous explanatory slide illustrations for a safety intructor; storyboards for a documentary animatic for a pitch trailer; stylised concept illustrations for a design consultancy agency; and a number of commissioned house & building portraits. I have also been teaching ink sketching classes for Work-Shop Melbourne, and will take workshops to a residency in regional Victoria later this year.

The work I am most interested in next is editorial, murals, and product illustration. The subjects I love to draw most at the moment are: mountains, wilderness & travel sketches, urban sketches, portraits (of humans but also of houses), and small objects from around the house. I love working in black and white with ink on paper, adding some watercolour sparingly.

My figurative portraits & illustrations feature high energy line work, painterly shading, blocked in colours and washes, and are influenced by my work in traditional hand-drawn animation. I prefer to work on paper or canvas than screen, and work with brush and ink, watercolour, oil paint and collage. However I do sometimes use the computer to add colour digitally (using layering skills I would use in making animation cels).

My website houses my current illustration portfolio, some of my prior illustration projects, and info on my previous exhibitions:
